Officially titled ‘An Act to Build Housing for Maine Families,’ LD 1829 is a Maine state law (signed June 2025) that may allow a minimum of 3 dwelling units per residential lot in municipalities governed by city councils. It builds on LD 2003 (2022), which established ADU by-right statewide, and removes the owner-occupancy requirement for ADUs.

LD 1829 takes effect July 1, 2026 for municipalities governed by city councils (including Portland, South Portland, and Westbrook). Town-meeting municipalities have until July 1, 2027.
